We asked Saheli, our 2023 Patricia Murillo Montesdeoca Scholarship recipient, what is was like for her to receive one of the Global Impact Associations Scholarships and about her experience studying in Bern at the World Trade Institute.
How did you hear about the scholarship?
I heard about the scholarship through the GIA and WTI websites.
What did you find most beneficial from the scholarship ?
The scholarship paid for my living expenses and my travel from Sri Lanka to Switzerland and back. I already received a tuition waiver from John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition, but usually the scholarship covers that too.
What did you find most beneficial from the scholarship?
I knew that doing a master’s degree was the next step in my career in international economic law, but I couldn’t afford it. The scholarship allowed me to take that next step, which wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.
How was your experience in the WTI?
My experience at the WTI has been great! I really like the interdisciplinary approach. Coming from a law background, the economics and political science classes were challenging but rewarding. It’s been great learning from some of the biggest names in the field and gaining both an academic and practical insight. I’ve also really enjoyed being part of such a multicultural and diverse class.
What would you say to someone attempting that scholarship?
Don’t rule yourself out, it’s definitely worth taking the chance and applying!
Why do you think it is relevant for students in your country in general?
Sri Lanka has so much unrealised potential in trade and investment, but we’re lacking in capacity and have a lot of room to grow. This program has taught me so much about how our policies could improve, and the role we can play in the multilateral system.
